Purpose: This study aimed to compare and evaluate the consistency between the results of different tests to identify the dominant eye, and also to assess the influence of the degree of eye dominance on agreement between these tests.
Methods: Forty male and female adults (average age, 22.78¡¾1.90 years) were selected. The results of four tests to determine eye dominance (hole-in-the-card, NPC (near point of convergence), eye piece, and (+) lens additional test) were compared to evaluate the consistency between them. In addition, the degree of eye dominance (high, medium, and low) was measured, and consistency between tests was assessed within each degree of eye dominance.
Results: The right eye proved dominant in most participants, and the dominant eye was identified with an agreement of 70.00-90.00% between tests. Agreement on identification of the dominant eye among all four tests occurred in 65.0% of cases. Although it was not statistically significant, the ratio of consistency in identification of the dominant eye was high, at 4 (100.00%), 3 (75.00%), and 2 (50.00%) between tests in the High, Medium, and Low dominance groups, respectively.
Consistency in identification of the dominant eye across the four tests was high, at 97.73¡¾18.90%, 85.71¡¾18.90%, and 85.00¡¾18.42% within the Low, Medium, and High dominance groups, respectively.
Conclusions: It is important to select the appropriate test for identification of the dominant eye, keeping in mind the application of the results. The choice of test is particularly important for individuals with relatively high dependence on the dominant eye.
